I have a set of wood that is very ugly. I will try to make something pretty from it...
Once I figure out how to upload photos I will...

Cheers

Well, holy poop, I think I've cracked the photo nut....watch out now, I'll never leave you alone!

Ok, so, I'm already disqualified as I've gone over budget. Unfortunately, I had a bit of water damage in my shop and lost the back to the set I was going to use and had to replace it. The price of the back cost more than the set did when I first bought it, but I'm going to ignore that little fact like it was an Island in the Douglas Channel and just focus on how much it could have been...

I've been noticing as of late that a lot of us, me included, are using Martin plans for a jumping off point. Recently at a high end shop I got a chance to try a Lowden. It made it's way across my bench and I took a tracing and a bunch of snappies. It's an O-22, and I thought I'd blatantly rip it off for kicks. Actually, it was the only box in the room that was really doing it's own thing tonewise, so I thought I'd get under the hood to see what makes it tick...

Sorry, you'll all have to suffer with iphone photos, it's what I've got....
Plus, the challenge for me will be completion by Nov. 25...

Over budget or not, glad to have ya here. The best part of the challenge for me has been being part of the group as we work on our builds. We have till the end of December now so you should be able to knock it out.

I'd be impressed if you finish this by the end of the month, though there is talk of pushing the deadline so keep it rolling. Can you cut back on some items to save money? For example I got tuners for my build for $10. I figure later on down the road they can always be replaced with nice ones. Also I'm pretty sure the rules state that building molds and that sort of thing doesn't count. Also I think that 'camo' wood looks great.

I've had it for over a year. It almost went from shipping box to dumpster with no stops in between. And then it sat for a year just looking at me being all ugly and stuff. And then one day I liked it. When I discovered the broken back I had to replace it out of sheer obstinacy. And come to think of it, since the first back is not going to be on the guitar, I guess it doesn't have to be considered in the cost....

I like the wood, too. Regardless of how you calculate your budget or whether you finish on time, I definitely want to see this guitar when it's finished. I'm eager to see that wood figure come alive under a finish. Press on!

I'm continually amazed how some woods come alive under a finish. I'm looking forward to seeing this one too.

Ok, so the sides are bent, but unprofiled. The sides were just barely big enough to make it, so I was unable to trace the back profile using the dish. Instead, manual sanding....

Nice purfling maker. I need to make one of those. I have had to thin purflings and just sanded by hand until things fit but your little gadget is much neater and accurate!

It's a takeoff from something I saw around here. It would be better to just lift the sole of a super sharp plane, but with the sandpaper you don't need to worry about grain direction. Took all of 30 seconds to make that tool....
